Argument vs. Explanation
Assignment
FINAL ANSWERS GROUP PROJECT 1
Participants:
Premise and conclusion are the components of an argument. A premise is the reason for accepting the conclusion of the argument. The conclusion is what the premise supposedly demonstrates. (Moore, B., Parker R. (2015) pg. 8.)
A few examples of key words to indicate a premise include:
What are the 3 criteria a statement must meet in order to count as an “objective” statement? Provide an example of an objective statement, and clearly explain how your example meets all three criteria?
The three criteria a statement must meet in order to count as an objective statement is:
In your own words, what is the difference between a deductive argument, and an inductive argument? Give examples of each type of argument to help explain your answer.
The difference between a deductive and inductive argument is the level of certainty in conclusion. In deductive arguments there are no new ideas in the conclusion whereas in inductive arguments’ conclusion contains new ideas.
An example of a deductive argument: PCC is located in Pasadena, and Pasadena is a city Los Angeles County, so PCC is located in Los Angeles County.
This is deductive argument because it doesn’t contain any new idea. The conclusion is that PCC is located in Los Angeles County. The first premise is true because we know that PCC is located in Pasadena as well as second premise is true because we know that Pasadena is a city of Los Angeles County; therefore, if both premises are true, the conclusion must be true.
An example of inductive argument: Julia received an A in her English class. Julia received A’s in every class she has taken. Therefore, Julia will get an A in her math class.
Both premises are true. Because it is certain that Julia received an A in her English class and that she will receive an A in every class she completed. However, we cannot be sure that she will get an A in her class. Also, the conclusion that states that Julia will get an A in the math class contains new idea. None of the premises talk about math class.

A few examples of key words to indicate a premise include:
- my evidence is
- the reason is that; and
- this can be seen from.
- hence;
- therefore; and
- consequently
- An argument presents evidence to support the claim in the conclusion whereas an explanation presents a cause of the fact represented by the conclusion.
- Example of Argument: I think Candace forgot about her appointment, she's an hour late.
- Candace is an hour late to her appointment, so the argument is the fact that she forgot about her appointment.
- Example of Explanation: Candace is an hour late to her appointment because she forgot about it.
- Candace forgot about her appointment which gives the explanation as to why she an hour late.
What are the 3 criteria a statement must meet in order to count as an “objective” statement? Provide an example of an objective statement, and clearly explain how your example meets all three criteria?
The three criteria a statement must meet in order to count as an objective statement is:
- Have a truth value;
- An agreed upon method where it is shown if it is true or false; and
- If two people were to disagree one of them must be incorrect.
In your own words, what is the difference between a deductive argument, and an inductive argument? Give examples of each type of argument to help explain your answer.

Reflection
For the purposes of this reflection, I have decided to evaluate my participation in group assignment 1. I chose this assignment because this is the first real writing assignment completed for this class and I hope to improve my skills as the group assignments become more challenging.
When I initially reviewed the prompt, I wrote my initial responses without referring to my notes. I did this to test my knowledge of what I retained from chapters 1, 2 and 4. Next, I reviewed my notes and made corrections. I then wrote my responses in sentence format in preparation of posting my responses.
Once I posted my responses, read through the responses of my group members I was ready to move on. The ability to post draft assignments, read other assignments and engage received was helpful because it challenged the work I completed. My peer’s comments help me to clarify my work and improve my skills. For this particular assignment, I realized that my response to question number 4 was not clear and the peer review gave me the opportunity to re-examine the differences between deductive arguments and inductive argument. It also pointed out the fact that learning the definitions of each concept is different from applying it to a sentence. I appreciate the feedback and hope that my peers continue to critically read posts and offer constructive criticism.
This assignment helped to build a foundation for this class through practice. I felt the project went smoothly and the participating members of the group were helpful and punctual with responses. The team effort made the process stress free and allowed for a complete learning experience. This assignment helped me gain a strong understanding of the components of an argument (premise/conclusion), argument vs. explanation, objective vs. subjective, and inductive vs. deductive.
