Holistic Health & Living Discussion
Overview:
Holistic health encompasses a wide range of health and wellness. When you think of holistic health what comes to mind? In your text, R Donatelle describes holistic health using dimensions for health and wellness. You can check out these dimensions here as well (http://www.scribd.com/doc/63771193/Chapter-1-in-Health-the-Basics-Promoting-Healthy-Behavior-Change (Links to an external site.).
Discussion:
Discuss which dimensions seem to be the most important in your life right now. How will this change 5-10 years from now for you? How does psychosocial health play a major role in your personal relationships (family, friends, boy/girlfriends)?
My Initial Post:
I strongly believe all of the dimensions are equally important for a balanced life. But if I had to prioritize the dimensions, I would put physical health as the first. Physical health is more than just about looking like one works out, but having one's physical body in good health. It's very important to maintain healthy habits when you are young so that your body will maintain and recover over the years. This will increase your chances to a higher quality of life.
I believe In 5-10 years physical health will continue to be a priority. Maybe even more important because I will be at an advanced age and I want to enjoy my retirement.
Mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health are important components of psychosocial health. Maintaining psyschosocial health helps a person lead a healthier life. This directly plays a role in one's personal relationships because if a person has a positive and balanced psychosocial health they usually demonstrate a high self-esteem, have pride in themselves and their accomplishment, are respectful and accepting. Most likely, these people will treat those in their life with the same values
Follow-Up Post:
I strongly believe maintaining a health physical life first and foremost will help one balance the remainder of the dimensions. Not only in one's current life but in their future. For example, if an individual eats healthy, is consistently active, the individual is most likely going to have a higher self-esteem and lead to mental, emotions and social balance. Further, if the individual begins these habits at a young age they are most likely to ward off typical issues of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes and some of the other preventative diseases that strike when one is middle-aged. Also, if one is physically healthy, and say they need to have a surgery or medical procedure (it could be anything, appendectomy, birth of a child, etc.) the recovery for that person will be much easier than for one with poor diet/health. So, personally, I do feel physical health is the root to the dimensions.
My biggest challenge is diet and exercise. I often hear people state they are "so busy," "stressed out" or they just don't have time to exercise. I often use these excuses as well, but honestly, we all can make the time. Maybe because I am middle age I see things differently, but I see so much time wasted texting, googling unnecessary information when we could just take a few minutes to make good decision.
Reflection:
This discussion was during our first week and was I excited. I am very interested in spiritual health and finding natural ways to help balance my life. We were asked to research websites that promoted the dimensions of physical, spiritual, environmental, mental, emotional and social. Reflecting on the components and what they each meant, it was clear to me that each component is important to a well balanced life. There are times we focus on aspect more than another or completely ignore another component, however, life will feel incomplete. It is important to nurture and care for each of the components and when we do this, our life is more likely to lead to a overall satisfaction.
Through my research I found a quote that I felt described it perfectly, the definition of wellness long used by the National Wellness Institute is "an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence."
