Class Discussions
Being an on-line student has it's pros and it's cons. These differ from student-to-student. For me, an on-line class allows for flexibility so that I can continue to work full-time and still spend time with my family. It also means the student must be disciplined and self-motivated.
An important aspect of an on-line class is the weekly discussions. Each week the professor typically posts a discussion prompt relating to the week's lesson. Part of your grade is to contribute an initial response and then respond to your classmates posts. In some ways it's easier because you have time to think about your responses and that puts the burden on the student to give an informative response. What I enjoy about this aspect is that we are able to learn from each other.
Our first week's discussion was to share one sentence describing a characteristic of a successful student. The following is my description of an on-line student:
"A successful on-line student is a self-starter and highly motivated person balancing life's challenges with the fervor of gaining an education in a not so traditional manner."
